How to Keep your Business Going During the Summer

July 20, 2016

Summer is here with the beautiful warm sunny weather and longer daylight hours.  While looking forward to that vacation at the cottage with your family, it’s hard to stay motivated.

As much as you would rather be doing other things where you are outside enjoying the warm sunny summer weather, you still have to keep your business going.  Here are some ideas about how you can keep your business going and still have time to enjoy the summer:

Start Your Day Early

Getting an early start gives you time to check your emails, check voicemail and respond to them before you start other tasks so that you can move on to the tasks you want to work on through the day.

Prioritize:  Make a List

Make a list of tasks that must be done during a week.  Now, set priorities for what you want to accomplish each day so that you can get them done.

Schedule Your Time So You Get Tasks Done

Schedule your time so that you have enough time to finish certain tasks each day and finish your work day early.  Set a time when you want to finish your day.  This helps you stay on track as well as helps you to clear your task list so that you still have time to enjoy the summer weather while it lasts.

Stay Focused

Stay focused on your daily task list and stick to your schedule by avoiding distractions that throw your attention off track.  Avoid office gossip.  When you call someone on the phone, get right to the point to get the information you need.  If you stay focused and stick to your schedule, not only will you accomplish what you set out to do but you may even finish your work day earlier than you expected.

Take Short Breaks

Take at least one short break during the morning and during the afternoon.  It is healthy to take short walk breaks.  Stand up and do some stretches.  Whatever you do, don’t sit at your desk all day.  Taking breaks also help you stay focused and be more productive.

When You Take a Break for Lunch, Go Outside

When you take a break for lunch, go outside and eat your lunch.  Go for a walk.  This way you can still enjoy the beautiful weather every day while it lasts.

Learn Something New

Usually while summer is not as busy as other times of the year for most businesses, this is a great opportunity to learn something new.  Maybe you want to learn to play a guitar or try a new sport or develop a new hobby.  Whatever you want to learn, summer is a great time to take advantage of the opportunity to learn something new.

Go on Vacation

The purpose of a vacation is to take a break from your daily work routine to relax, re-charge, travel, spend time with your family and take time out for your health and have some “me” time.  Whatever you do, don’t take work with you.  Leave the laptop at home.  Leave the briefcase at home.  Chances are other people whom you need to contact or work with are also on vacation.  Vacations are a time to give yourself a well-deserved rest, have fun, and enjoy the summer weather so take advantage of the time as much as you can.  Come back from your vacation relaxed, refreshed, de-stressed, ready and enthusiastic to work again.
